Hey there, tax jockeys. How’s your Wednesday been so far? Feeling less whiny today? Good. We have some new salary data to share with you, from the folks over at Korn Ferry, that might be of interest.
The management consulting firm dug deep into its pay database, did some math, punched some buttons, and came up with how much tax professionals in the U.S. are making, on average, based on experience:
- Tax analyst (1-2 years experience): $60,050
- Intermediate tax accountant (2-4 years experience): $66,969
- Senior tax accountant (6+ years experience): $99,625
But Korn Ferry didn’t stop there. It also analyzed average annual salaries for tax professionals in nine major cities across the U.S.:
Atlanta
- Tax analyst: $59,175
- Intermediate tax accountant: $66,006
- Senior tax accountant: $100,093
Boston
- Tax analyst: $70,788
- Intermediate tax accountant: $78,777
- Senior tax accountant: $116,085
Chicago
- Tax analyst: $65,769
- Intermediate tax accountant: $73,258
- Senior tax accountant: $108,509

- Senior tax accountant: $103,927
Denver
- Tax analyst: $63,318
- Intermediate tax accountant: $70,563
- Senior tax accountant: $104,769
Minneapolis

- Intermediate tax accountant: $71,590
- Senior tax accountant: $105,049
New York

- Senior tax accountant: $121,041
Philadelphia

- Senior tax accountant: $107,481
San Francisco

Of these nine cities, the only one that pays less than the national average, for tax analyst and intermediate tax accountant, is the ATL. And tax accountants with six or more years of experience make well into six figures in Boston, New York, and San Fran.
Anyone from Atlanta want to chime in on whether these numbers are indicative of what you are seeing or hearing? If anything else stands out to you, let us know.
