As seen on Australian Financial Review, a university is handing out a total of $10,000 ($6,659 in freedom bucks) in prize money to any students who can make a compelling case for accounting as a career in a TikTok or Instagram Reel.

The pitch:

The contest is open only to UNSW students over the age of 18 who reside in Australia so no one in our audience get any bright ideas. Don’t think that’ll be a problem anyway.

The winner will receive $5,000 ($3,331 USD); runner up gets $3k and third place $2k.

NewsNation, a Nexstar media property that reaches nearly 67 million households in the United States through their TVs, decided to dedicate two minutes and 39 seconds to the accountant shortage for its morning segment today. The full segment is embedded below if you’d like to skip the text1.

NN anchor Elizabeth Prann took to the airwaves to let your TV-watching grandma know that accountants do more than taxes and warned a shortage of them could have catastrophic effects on the economy.

Yes, we already knew this. Grandma doesn’t.

She says: “Immediately you think ‘oh my goodness, tax season is in the spring and I need my CPA to help me with my taxes. If that person is tired they’ll make mistakes, the IRS is going to come knocking.’ That’s just one of the ways that this could impact us at home. But really it’s much more than that.”

Do you feel appreciated and valued yet?

In the second half of the short segment, they discuss AI. Highlight from that:

Morning in America host Markie Martin: “How is artificial intelligence playing a role?”

Elizabeth: “Well, it’s playing a role a lot. And if you think about people going into the business, well let’s think of Gen Zers. A lot of them make their decisions based on social media, or things online, maybe an accountant really isn’t that appealing, it’s not really that sexy, it’s not being shared online.”

“And then there are other factors like the pay…The pay is not great.”

So they really didn’t address how AI is playing a role, much less a lot, except to say that people used “an AI-generated form” to fill out their taxes in TurboTax last year (?). They also made a grave error in their reporting:

Earning the title of certified public accountant (CPA) requires at least a master’s degree and passing a grueling four-hour exam.

Wouldn’t just four hours of CPA exam be lovely and hardly grueling at all? One can dream…

“Salaries for entry level accounting positions aren’t very high,” read an accompanying article about the segment. “[A]nd it can take years to build a loyal client base.” Wat? What does that have to do with accounting degrees? You know what, never mind.

I guess as far as two minute segments go it could have been worse. We didn’t really come away from that understanding how AI can solve the accounting shortage but now your grandma is going to be freaked out about her 401k and someone’s uncle may finally understand that accountants do more than taxes so maybe that was an effective use of less than three minutes of broadcast time.

 1. Words are dumb anyway. ↩

I’m in the middle of a tedious admin project that involves digging back through our archive to update old posts I’ve long forgot about and one such forgotten post I stumbled across was this: Some Guy Made a Bangin’ Cover of the IRS Hold Music and You Need to Hear It

Seeing that post reminded me that some months ago, we were informed of yet another — perhaps even superior — remix of IRS hold music that I never got around to posting. Seeing as it’s a holiday week and there’s little going on, there’s no time like the present.

Ladies and gentlemen, feast your ears on Jason StaatsIRS Hold Music but it’s lofi beats.

Oh, and here’s a completely related article The New York Times published a couple days ago: Millions of Taxpayers Call the IRS for Help. Two-Thirds Don’t Reach Anyone.

KPMG couldn’t audit their way out of a paper bag but some props are due for proving themselves capable of making a mildly entertaining two-minute YouTube video which we’re about to share with you momentarily. The last time we caught KPMG embarrassing themselves on YouTube, it was this unspeakable disaster from KPMG Denmark and things could only go up from there. But now fellow Scandinavians at KPMG Norway are here to tackle the topic of returning to the office post-COVID and honestly … it’s not bad. Hell, we might even say it’s good. For an accounting firm video, anyway.

Don’t worry, there are English subtitles.

Not bad, not bad. It’s no ‘In a JIT‘ (which sadly has been pulled since it was uploaded in 2011 but old-timers might remember its creator ‘The Most Interesting Accountant in the World’) but it definitely ranks higher than Shabooya. And much, much higher than Armanino’s taco video.

We’re a year and a half late on sharing this IRS hold music cover song with you, but better late than never eh? Well, unless you’re late making estimated tax payments.

Uploaded April 13, 2020, the video has a mere 1,413 views as of posting this. How this didn’t go viral and end up being the star track of the Better Call Saul soundtrack is beyond us. But here it is:

As seen in a Reddit thread about the torture that is hours upon hours of IRS hold music.

Here is another remix that ended up on Mashable a couple years back, and if you’re really feel masochistic today, you can also find the original hold music track on Soundcloud because of course you can.

In this 2019 Washington Post piece entitled “Our classical music critic was on hold with the IRS for an hour. She didn’t hate the music,” we learn more than we ever wanted to know about this ear worm of a song:

The IRS’s hold music is called “One to One,” and it is often credited to “Fresh Optimism,” the name of the collection of tracks in which it was originally represented. Getty’s website, however, credits “One to One” only to “RFM,” which it says is an entity in Tivoli, N.Y. — one of many royalty-free music companies that Getty acquired. The IRS licensed the track in 2009 from Jupitermedia, also since acquired by Getty.

Bet you didn’t expect to get the backstory on what is quite possibly the most enraging hold music in the world when you woke up this morning, did you? Who knows, maybe it’ll come up on Jeopardy! some day and you’ll be the only one who knows the answer.

I searched the GC archive and found just one single mention of practitioner line hold music from 2016 in which the Wall Street Journal tracked down an accountant from Maryland who said: “You get tired of it, no matter how nice it is,” she said.

And that about sums it up. Maybe we’ll get lucky one of these years and the IRS will find a new track. Until then, One to One it is.

The last time we wrote about an accounting-related video game around here was nearly three years ago when some guy made a quickie called Busy Season that involved a dick awfully phallic-looking bean in various harrowing situations. Given that the Venn diagram of people who understand what busy season is like and people who have the time to create video games are two perfect circles with miles of blank space between them, it’s no wonder we haven’t seen much on the accounting simulator front since.

Well, thanks to my crippling addiction to scrolling YouTube with my thumb while prone on the couch at 3 in the morning in hopes of scraping up the tiniest bit of dopamine, we have another to add to the stable. What does that make, three? We can’t forget 2016’s Accounting, a horrific VR adventure that simultaneously captures accounting perfectly while also having absolutely nothing to do with it.

So what’s next in the ever-expanding library of video games tangentially related to accounting? It’s called Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion and my favorite cult leader gaming YouTuber Call Me Kevin played it for us last week.

The Steam game description reads: “Play as an adorable yet trouble-making turnip. Avoid paying taxes, solve plantastic puzzles, harvest crops and battle massive beasts all in a journey to tear down a corrupt vegetable government!” So really it’s a sovcit simulator. With turnips!

Enjoy.

Endlessly scrolling my YouTube recommendations the other night in a desperate attempt to scrape up the tiniest shred of dopamine, I came across the video I’m about to share with you all. It’s about the “Hall of Tortured Souls,” an easter egg buried in Microsoft Office 1995. This website has been around for 12 years, many of which have been spent bemoaning the lack of literally anything happening to write about thanks to the subject matter, but surely at some point we stumbled across this and wrote it up? Apparently not.

So we can find the time to talk about AICPA CEO and President Barry Melancon admiring the fine art of chihuahua juggling but not the Microsoft Excel Hall of Tortured Souls?

Man, no wonder people say this website sucks. Moving on, as we must do.

I humbly present: the Hall of Tortured Souls.

Who populates the Hall of Tortured Souls? You might think it’s staffed by the ghosts of interns past, forever pacing the halls in search of lunch orders. But you would be wrong. It’s just a shout-out developers gave themselves because why not, it couldn’t have been easy putting together the first 32-bit version of Office.

Devs even managed to get their pictures in there (pic via Spinpasta Wiki)

We can assume the styling was inspired in part (or entirely) by Doom, which came out in 1993 and was really unlike anything else we’d seen up until that point because it was the early 90s and we were practically still speaking to people through tin cans connecting by string. The old folks around here know what I’m talking about.

So next time you find yourself rotting away in Excel purgatory, remember the folks who made all those columns and rows possible. No, not clients. Devs, stupid!

It’s always funny to me as a person who has spent the majority of my adult life lingering around the periphery of the accounting profession when, in the course of my day outside of work, I randomly come across accounting-related material. It’s especially funny when said material is being reacted to by the population at large, as they often seem shocked and horrified by what they’re seeing. It’s like watching little kids at the zoo seeing a giraffe for the first time — on the one hand they’re fascinated but on the other slightly alarmed and wondering how such a creature can even exist. That’s exactly what happened when someone posted this PwC Elevate roll call to r/videos.

For those who don’t know, PwC Elevate is “designed to provide students, with early internship offers, an opportunity to build relationships with PwC professionals while discovering the possibilities of an innovative and digitally enabled career first-hand. As a participant you should be prepared to see your career soar to new heights!” In case you couldn’t tell, that’s copied text from their website.

So this is the first impression these future capital market servants are getting of their possibly future firm. The upside for PwC is that the other three firms these students might consider working for are likely also doing this cringey shit, it just so happens to be PwC’s day in the spotlight for this particular one.

The comment section on YouTube is locked (probably for the best); however, the Reddit thread is jam-packed with thousands of people sharing their own stories of corporate “feel-good” nonsense. You don’t have to be an accountant to relate to the awkwardness of playground hijinks wrapped in the illusion of “fun.”

Card

And

Card

There are countless more, including a guy who said this video gives him a new appreciation for COVID-19, but I’ll spare you and let you go check them out yourself.

I’ll say this: Firms embarrassing themselves with culty cheerleader chants never gets old.

It was only a matter of time before somebody did a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) parody of Naughty by Nature’s classic early ’90s toe-tapper “O.P.P.” Not that we really needed or wanted one, but here we are.

Self-proclaimed “Singing CPA” Steven Zelin felt compelled to do his own PPP version of “O.P.P” and posted it on his YouTube channel on Monday.

Today I have a special treat for y’all. With 1.53 million subscribers, Steve1989MREInfo isn’t exactly an underground YouTuber, and I have no doubt some of you are already familiar with this Internet treasure. But for those of you who haven’t yet experienced the joy of a Steve1989 MRE review, get ready to meet your new favorite YouTuber.

I can’t even remember how I originally came across Steve, no doubt he snuck into my recommended somehow. And boy am I glad he did. There’s just something so charming about his excitement when he unwraps a rancid, 100-year-old military ration, his hands shaking as he melodically pops open a botulism-infected can with his military-issued can opener.

Thirty-year-old Steve Thomas of Florida has been unboxing and dining on military rations for YouTube since 2015, starting his channel shortly after recovering from E. coli which he got from a Ukranian ration. If you browse his comment section, you’ll note an overwhelming number of commentators asking out loud how this man doesn’t get sick with every video. “The corona virus couldn’t do shit to steve,” reads a comment on his latest video.

A 2017 GQ profile of Steve captured his charm perfectly:

I have watched most, if not all, of Steve1989’s uploads. It’s hard to explain why I find them so riveting, in part because I’m so far from what you might imagine his core demographic to be—my YouTube diet consists of Carly Rae Jepsen videos, cat-themed Vine compilations, and local news bloopers. But there’s pleasure to be found in watching a person get really, really excited about something, whatever that something may be. Thomas is like a kid on Christmas morning. The contents of every ration are a surprise, like a frequently disgusting geode. And there’s even a kind of horror movie element at play here. Instead of shrieking at the characters on screen to put away the Ouija board or flee the obviously haunted basement, you’re begging Steve to keep that finger dipped in 60-year-old peanut butter as far away from his mouth as possible.

Anytime you start feeling sorry for yourself because you’re eating box lunch for the sixth day in a row, just pop on a Steve video and I guarantee you’ll feel better in a matter of moments. I suggest 1964 ham and lima beans. Enjoy. And I apologize in advance for introducing you to your new obsession, believe me there are worse ways to waste time on YouTube.

I actually had a dinosaur mukbang planned for today’s Busy Season Zen but then I came across this and, well, considering it’s now March and busy season problems are in full swing, I figured why not. Seems oddly appropriate although I’m not entirely sure why. Volume warning, turn it down or pop in some headphones unless you work in the kind of office where no one is going to question why you’re jamming out to the Bee Gees in the middle of the afternoon.

Fun fact about the goose-stepping military spectacle: North Korea is one of the few nations in the world still to practice it. “Experts say the spectacle allows Kim to display to the world highly disciplined, devoted and powerful troops as he manoeuvres in a decades-long nuclear stand-off with the United States and South Korea,” writes AP. Only the best of the best are chosen through a rigorous process that takes into account loyalty to the government and height, among other traits. Having a solid family background doesn’t hurt either. In other words, randoms with sketchy drunk dads probably aren’t goose-stepping right off the street into these units.

Bee Gees not your thing? Don’t worry, YouTube has you covered. There are hours of this stuff, from the SpongeBob theme to Wii music. Personally I’m digging this version, but I have a soft spot for Thomas the Tank Engine dubs.

And then of course there’s the best one of all. It speaks for itself.

Need more Zen? We understand. Knock yourself out.

Playing Overwatch recently, I lucked out and managed to solo queue with a decent group of players in Quick Play of all places. I realize this is going to go over your head if you don’t play the game, so for those of you who don’t, let’s say if Quick Play were an accounting firm it would definitely be Grant Thornton. In other words, totally disorganized players who don’t give a shit and lose a lot. Anyhoo, I found some decent randoms so we grouped up and had a pretty decent run playing together and — gasp — talking in team chat. Turns out my new friends were all over, including a kid in the Bahamas and a Canadian.

Between rounds, we got to talking about what we do (try explaining “I make dick jokes about the accounting profession” as a job to a 10-year-old in another country), what we’re into other than Overwatch, you know, all that stuff. Of course since I was team leader the topic of cats came up. I immediately demanded my new teammates pay the cat tax when they mentioned their own cats and was surprised when one came through, with a bonus dog tax payment attached. Now, I don’t believe anyone should overpay taxes, but in this case I was thrilled.

It got me thinking … dogs don’t get nearly enough love around these parts. It’s not that I don’t like them, it’s just that I don’t have them. I love bumping into the dogs around my neighborhood when I’m out for a walk, and subscribe to a good handful of dog-centered subreddits just to get my fix (don’t tell my cats, they get easily triggered, the snowflakes).

All that to say, when this popped up in my YouTube recommended this morning, I just knew this had to be our Busy Season Zen for the week. This place definitely needs more dogs. Anyway, I’ve rambled on long enough. Here you go and enjoy.

Need more Zen? Can’t guarantee there will be dogs but we’ve got ya anyway.

When I spend hours upon hours scrolling through YouTube watching old To Catch a Predator clips looking for something cute in order to bring you the very best for Busy Season Zen, I’m usually looking for something that lasts longer than 60 seconds (insert joke about your ex-boyfriend here). Case in point, the ten hours of paint drying video. Obviously you can’t hole yourself up in the bathroom stall and watch paint drying, but just in case you were able to do so, it’s there.

This little guy (or gal?) is likely the shortest Busy Season Zen video we’ve ever posted. And I don’t care. If this doesn’t put you in a mood, well, maybe it’s time to brush up the ole resume and think about a career change.

Go ahead and put him on repeat and imagine yourself marching into HR’s office to declare “I quit!” Or something. Hurry up and watch, actually, there’s work to be done.

Need more Zen? You know we’ve got you.

As has been tradition ’round these parts going back a few years, it’s officially time to break out the Busy Season Zen.

If you’re new, Busy Season Zen is a dose of distraction, whether that be cute little ducklings or 10 straight hours of paint drying. You never know what you’re going to get.

We know you’re stressed, so consider this our permission to hide in the bathroom stall with your phone to take a crying break.

Now that that’s out of the way, please allow us to introduce you to The Crusher.

Remember, kids, don’t try this at home — or rather at the office. Some of you may not be old enough to remember when a little aggressive shredding ended a certain defunct public accounting firm. So yeah, don’t do that.

Full disclosure: I’ve never watched a single episode of “Game of Thrones.” I realize I’m in the minority here. It’s not that I don’t want to watch it; I’m just too cheap to buy HBO or HBO NOW. My wife and I started paying for Netflix two years ago because we were told all the GoT episodes were on there. Come to find out we were given some bad information.

Through the years, Going Concern has whipped out some GoT-inspired articles, like when Caleb explained how the series parallels the world of public accounting. I don’t get it, but a lot of you probably will.

I do know Sunday is a big day—not only could we see Phil and his blue KPMG hat win the Masters (he’s in a four-way tie for 12th as I write this), but the premier of the final season of GoT will be airing that evening. And it’s also the eve of the finale of Busy Season 2019.

So, of course, Philadelphia-based CPA firm Drucker & Scaccetti made a video that combined tax season with medieval-looking people in medieval-type outfits in a medieval-type setting. The firm calls itself the “Tax Warriors,” and that’s the premise of this video.

No, there aren’t any dragons. No, there aren’t any raunchy sex scenes. And no, there aren’t any beheadings. But if you like nerdy-looking accountants dressed for battle holding swords and shields, then this video is for you.

So here we are, the last Busy Season Zen of busy season. You almost made it, just a little bit more to go. If you’ve made it this far, certainly you can crawl your way to the finish line.

For this week’s zen, we thought about doing satisfying factory videos or bears playing in someone’s pool but then I thought nah, you know what this needs? A CAT. Specifically, a cat purring for 8 whole hours. That’s it. Sometimes simple is best.

We hope this year’s zen has helped even just a little bit and as always, if you need more zen, the archives are always there for you. See you next year, you bad ass survivor you.

Birds can be kinda weird, as pets anyway. I mean, yeah I understand it’s just as weird to collect small predators who shit in a box, but birds can be loud, too clever for their own good, and the damn things tend to outlive everyone. Plus their ancestors are dinosaurs and the last thing you want in your house is a mini T-rex crapping all over your floor.

Still, I admire bird people. It takes a lot of work to care for a bird. Whatever this lady is doing, she’s doing it right.

Friendly reminder: busy season is drawing to a close (YES, there is a light at the end of this tunnel and no, it isn’t the light from an oncoming freight train) so we’re going to be calling it quits on Busy Season Zen soon. Don’t fret, there’s always more zen in the archive should you need a fix.

Do any of you have favorite Twitch streamers? Personally I find the idea of watching someone play a video game for hours on end to be even more depressing than playing video games for hours on end yourself (guilty), but hey, who am I to judge how other people spend their time? I once wasted the good part of an afternoon prank calling my colleagues with my boss, so I’m not really in a position to question others here.

Despite my superiority complex when it comes to streamers, I’ve watched enough of them to get the gist. Some guy, usually in an oversized gaming chair, gives us commentary while the screen flickers and seizes and takes us through the nuance of whatever game the streamer is playing. Yeah, I think that’s pretty much it, so fellow oldies go ahead and consider yourself caught up on the twitchers. The rest of you, get off my lawn.

One of the only Twitch streamers I actually like has built an entire channel around not games but prank calling Indian call center scammers, much to the enjoyment of his massive fanbase. So it was really only a matter of time before someone took the “IRL” stream concept and applied it to, what else, Microsoft Excel.

When I spotted this on Reddit earlier, someone said it’s a crime this doesn’t have more views, hence sharing it with you all.

Can we please make Ballmercon a reality? I might be able to squeeze a few sponsorship bucks out of the powers that be if we can make this a thing. Of course, our Excel team would no doubt get hammered by PwC’s since they’re the Duke of accounting firms and we’re pretty much the Possum Holler Community College team. Oh well.

Remember when you were a kid and you couldn’t wait to grow up so you could eat candy for dinner and stay up as late as you want? And then you actually became an adult and realized you’re so tired from the never-ending rat race that you can’t wait to take a nap and refresh your old bones with a nutritious meal of broiled chicken and broccoli.

Yeah, being a grown-up sucks. I feel like we all got scammed into thinking it’s this great, infinite party when really it’s just a bad Groundhog Day sequel involving trudging from Point A to Point B and back again 5x a week (er, 6 in some of y’all’s cases). Last weekend I stayed up until 4 a.m. playing Fallout 76 and I still haven’t recovered from that crap. This is bullshit.

So for this week’s Busy Season Zen, I went back. Way back. Back to a more innocent time when it was totally normal to invite your mailman into your house to chill and no one thought it prudent to check the sex offender registry first before letting their kids hang out with a grown-ass man who played with puppets. I dunno about you but I miss it.

Mr. McFeely is just hanging out explaining how paper is made and I can’t even get my Amazon delivery guy to open the door to my condo lobby and throw my package inside half the time. Like I said, bullshit.

Hello and welcome back to another Friday edition of Busy Season Zen. The good news is it’s Friday, the bad news is it’s still busy season.

Hopefully you’re taking care of yourself with good nutrition, rest when possible, and a bath or two when the mood strikes. More likely, however, you’re performing your own personal science experiment to find out how long a human body can survive on Red Bull and takeout Chinese alone.

If it were possible, we bet firms would hire 14 year olds as interns and first years; teenagers are really the only ones built to survive this shit for an extended period of time.

Hopefully this helps, if for a brief five minutes of your miserable life.

Ed. note: The video linked below was privated by KPMG at some point, unfortunately we did not save a copy of it. Guess they took our advice.

Those of you who know me know it’s rare that I’m speechless. I have an opinion on everything from cat food to those little sensors attached to street lights that serve to give priority to approaching emergency vehicles at intersections. And while I have an opinion about the following video I’m about to share with you as well, I’m too busy trying to untwist my neck and shoulders from an uncomfortable cringe position to fully offer an opinion on it at this time. In words, that is.

Watch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK3nat-P_K8

OK first of all, no one should be taking fashion advice from this Bob Lewis guy. His hair is just two sideburns short of making him look like an extra in Westworld. Not Westworld the show, the 1973 film. While his suit is tailored, it only serves to show off his pasty, middle-aged skinnyfat body. NOT A GOOD LOOK FOR A MAN YOUR AGE, BOB. And would it kill you to get a little sun, bro? I’m not talking about slathering yourself in cocoa butter and baking at the beach, but like literally stepping outside once in a while before 8 p.m.

While I of all people understand the importance of professional dress (having worn a t-shirt and skinny jeans to more than one Senate hearing in my day), did we really need a bad Schoolhouse Rock on the subject? It seems to perpetuate this idea that young professionals are snot-nosed brats with gnat-sized attention spans who dress like toddlers and need help matching their socks. Come on, you guys.

We know public accountants need a little help in the fashion department, but do they really need what boils down to a Sesame Street skit on how not to dress like a dweeb to figure it out?

Please stick to handing out gift cards to interns and leave the hokey singalongs to Elmo and Friends.

When I die, I want my Wiki to say:

Hooper had amassed the world’s largest collection of accounting music and literature, which is now kept in the Hooper Memorial Museum of Accounting. Even accountants are too embarrassed to visit it.

While my contemporaries are out collecting Pokemon to dull the pain of working in public, I have been quietly collecting accounting music. In my quest to catch them all, I discovered that the Big 4 actually have company songs. What's more interesting is the quality of the unofficial songs created by employees and interns. Many of these have probably been featured on Going Concern at one time or another, but as a service to you all, I thought to compile them all here for your judgment. Click through the pages to listen to them all.

Ernst & Young

First we have this shocker from EY, I still haven’t been able to listen to the whole thing start to finish. Let me know how it goes for you.

By comparison, this is a rather respectable attempt from the LA intern class. After the previous video, this almost makes me want to work at EY.

PwC

While a little catchier than EY’s attempts, it still has a cheesy veneer that makes me want to hammer railroad spikes into my temples.

Unfortunately for PDubs, their staff created “Is This The Way To Do an Audit.” It was nowhere near as impressive as Black & Yellow.

Deloitte

I’m not entirely sure if this is the official Deloitte song, but it’s got all the makings of a Disney classic. It is the by far the best (by this I mean, not the worst) Big 4 anthem.

However, once again crushed by an intern with a song worthy enough for my Sonos playlist. I hope they made this kid a partner instantly!

KPMG

This classic from KPers just screams power and energy!

The intern contribution is actually somewhat respectable, though it’s hardly a chart buster.

Of all Big 4 music videos, this contribution from Australian Meri Amber is hands down my favorite. What’s even better is it’s part of a whole album about accounting! I’m pretty sure she didn’t get a job at KPMG, but I am sure a career as a YouTuber is probably more rewarding than a career in audit.

Honorable Mentions

Money All Day by MC Rayman has been played about a hundred times in my office. I wish he produced more accounting songs.

Public Accounting Anthem by Petty Ca$h is easily a hit in the accounting world. He’s got a few other songs, but this one is the best, hands down.

Dru Vocals is not an accountant by trade (hence the quality). He was commissed by Another71.com to produce a number of educational raps about accounting to assist with CPA Exam Prep. I don’t know how useful they are for study, but they’re pretty catchy.

If I’ve missed any other honorable mentions, chuck them into the comments below.

Bonus: I created a playlist.

This video is several years old, but I hadn't seen it before today and I'll be damned if it isn't glorious and worth sharing with all of you.

I'll admit that the talent here really belongs with the editor of the video, but someone was inspired to make it by the words of the ageless wonder that is Timothy Gearty.

If you're unfamiliar with JFA, then this short compilation of her mentions on LWT will get you up to speed.

We've all known a Janice in accounting at some point in our careers. Some of you might even be a Janice from accounting. If so, I hope you're enjoying your reign of terror while it lasts, you MONSTERS.

Yes, October 15th is first runner-up to September 15th in the realm of terrible tax filing deadlines, but it is not short on pain for CPAs who specialize in the dark arts of taxes.

If you or your clients are still rounding up K-1s and whatnot, Joe Kristan has a nice round-up of steps to take to (try) beating the deadline. If you're fortunate enough to have everything wrapped up, great! You get to enjoy this mashup of happy people dancing in movies without any feelings of dread:

Happy October 15th.

The post A Non-Comprehensive Ranking of Celebrity-Accountant Beefs appeared first on Going Concern.

]]>
1. Rihanna vs. Berdon/Pete Gounis
Plenty of backstory and huffy comments here, but honestly, all you need to do is watch this NSFW video and know that this is best celebrity-accountant beef to-date:

2. Elton John vs. PwC
In terms of star power and egos, this beef should be #1, but the story itself is pretty meh, so that knocks it down a spot. John sued the firm along with a host of others for negligence back in 2000, but PwC ultimately prevailed, feeling vindicated, of course: "Auditors are not 'a bank of last resort,' available as a deep pocket."

3. Patricia Cornwell vs. Anchin, Block, Anchin/Evan Snapper
Cornwell won $50.9 million in her lawsuit against ABA back in 2013 for negligence and breach of fiduciary duties. Among other things, Cornwell claimed that Evan Snapper, the principal in charge of her finances, cut a check for $5,000 to his own daughter as a bat mitzvah gift. Anchin won a re-trial in March 2014 after a judge "dismissed several claims based on legal technicalities."

4. Wesley Snipes, Goldie Hawn, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Al Pacino, Natalie Portman, Carly Simon, Sylvester Stallone, Uma Thurman, Barbara Walters, Caroline Kennedy, Matt Lauer, et al. vs. Kenneth I. Starr
Starr's fourth marriage was to a stripper. Then he started a Ponzi scheme.

5. Brian McKnight vs. Vernon Brown & Company
McKinght says VB&C didn't pay his taxes for nearly a decade and then when the firm tried to clean up the mess:

In the lawsuit he claims Brown knew he screwed up and secretly contacted Congressman Henry Waxman and gave him a phony sob story that got Waxman to contact the IRS and get McKnight back on an installment plan.

McKnight says Brown was so bad he screwed up the installment plan and the taxes were never paid.

10 years, bro. Come on.

6. Kevin Durant vs. Joel Lynn Elliot
Durant's agent recommended Elliot to the Oklahoma City Thunder forward but it sounds like he was this guy was taking liberties with the personal expenses:

In one instance, K. Durant Enterprises paid for travel for Durant and other employees totaling more than $1 million. Some of that travel, however, was for personal reasons, but it was deducted as a business expense, the lawsuit said.

"In preparing a client's tax returns, a reasonable prudent accountant would have conducted a basic inquiry and sought documentation to confirm that each travel expensed for which a deduction was recorded was truly business related," the lawsuit said.

Yes, you would think so.

7. Khloe Kardashian vs. ???
Who gives a fuck.

Indulge me while I express my love for the SNL Celebrity Jeopardy! skits that aired between 1996 and 2002.

As an undergrad, I remember a battalion of bros crowding around my roommate's desktop — this was in the STONE AGE before everyone schlepped laptops, you see — watching Norm Macdonald as Burt Reynolds and Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery, laughing until we cried and/or pissed ourselves.

Among other important achievements, they rightly questioned the honor of Alex Trebek's mother and solidified the comedic value of large cowboy hats.

Anyway, this morning I stumbled upon this treasure over at the Accounting subreddit:

Not quite a Turd Ferguson moment, but for this site's purposes, it works.

Winter has not been kind. And with Punxsutawney Phil predicting 6 more weeks of chilling terror, we can only hope for the best.

The following video is from Romania in 2012 and it shows just how slow progress can be when winter does its worst. The description says that the snowblower actually derailed a couple of times and a crane was needed to place it back on the tracks. By the pace of things, they're probably still digging 2 years later.

Only 30 days left until spring.

But more importantly, only 12 days until March 2nd (large accelerated filers) and twenty-five and twenty-six until March 15th (corporate filing deadline) and 16th (accelerated filers) respecitvely. Sadly, it's 41 if you're shooting for March 31st and 56 until April 15th.

Hang in there, everyone.

We're going to take a different approach to Busy Season Zen today, as it's getting to that point where cute ducklings and cuddly kittens may not be doing it for you.

Perhaps you've seen this video making the rounds, and if so forgive me. Actually no, don't, I don't care.

11foot8 is a site that records footage of trucks getting sardine-canned at a railroad trestle in Durham, NC with a clearance of — you guessed it — 11 ft, 8 in. Despite copious amounts of signage, trucks continue to eat it as they take on the trestle, sometimes hilariously so.

Enjoy this mashup of trucks meeting said trestle in the most unfortunate way. (Warning: you may want to turn your sound down just a tad/wear headphones)

While we were diligently combing through YouTube today, we realized that YouTube is kind of a sick place. Maybe it's our viewing habits but how difficult can it be to find a cute, soothing video to chase the busy season blues away?

Enter Bob Ross. Yes, that Bob Ross. We should have probably saved this for the end of busy season, since Bob is so damn soothing and all, but hey, whatever. Nothing about Bob is sick or terrible or angry, meaning it's probably for the best that he didn't end up in public accounting.

Last year, we tried to ease your busy season blues with cute, mind-numbing videos every Wednesday in a feature we called Busy Season Zen. We're getting an early start on it this year even though your agony hasn't quite started because all of us could use a distraction right about now. Feel free to bookmark this and return to it later.

In case you haven't heard, DC got a little bit of snow yesterday. Safe to say, Giant shelves are missing all their milk, bread, and chicken breast in the Washington Metro, all for a couple inches. Don't ask me what's up with the chicken, that's just what they do when the weather is about to go bad.

For one Washington resident, the snow was a total blast. You'll note 16-month-old panda cub Bao Bao shows better coordination in the white stuff than most Washington drivers do out on the road, but I digress.

We'll be back next week with more like this and if you need a fix sooner, check the Busy Season Zen archive.

In typical accounting firm fashion, PwC chairman Dennis Nally is finally getting around to doing the ice bucket challenge now that almost everyone has forgotten about the ice bucket challenge. He's a busy guy so it's understandable if he's had better things to do over the last several weeks.

What's with the awkward hand-wringing? This guy would definitely not get an intern offer with all that fidgeting.

Once a month, Greg gets together with his slightly-funnier-than-he-is pals to rip on the month in headlines. This month, the crew chats about the new online dating service matching employers with job seekers, a website for married cheaters that thinks accountants make the best dates, accountants wasting time on the Internet at work, the best time of day to be ethical, and President Obama's beef with accountants.

Enjoy!

In case you're wondering, Monthly Close articles are chosen by random — and by random, we mean like this:

Greg: Hey Caleb and Adrienne, anything interesting happen this month we should talk about?
Adrienne:
Caleb: SURE BUDDY! Check out this, this, and this *emails large list of links*
Greg: AG?
Adrienne:

SO, if you enjoyed a particular article for the month, do Greg a solid and let him know to add it to his list of Monthly Close candidates by shooting us an email, subject line The Monthly Close. Compliments, complaints and other general bitching may also be sent to that address (as usual).

With Tax Day come and gone, we're wrapping Busy Season Zen for now. Yeah yeah, not all of you are in tax, and those of you that are still have extensions and amended returns and all that… we get it.

If you guys want a weekly video of puppies or kittens or hot lava eating Coke cans to get your mind off of work, we can keep this thing going and just call it something different. Otherwise, BSZ will return next year, much like your misery.

If this is, in fact, the last completely off topic video for the year, then we leave you with this:

Your runner up for today is also a dancer, just of a different sort:

Many happy returns… er, no pun intended.

Sometimes you need more than just a cute, weird animal. So for this week's edition of Busy Season Zen, we're giving you not one but TWO video escapes.

First, the armadillo. You may think it looks like a rat in armor but I think it's adorable.

If that wasn't enough for you, maybe you'd like to take a 3 hour journey on a train through Norway. It sounds weird but apparently this is a thing. After watching a few minutes, I could totally see how this might be something soothing to keep running in the background while you're grinding away toward the finish line.

Undeterred by your criticism over the last video, our own Greg Kyte hit the pavement once more and talked to non-accountants about accounting matters. In the first video, we called these people "stupid" but upon further reflection realized they are actually just completely ignorant of matters that make your world go round such as ASCs, the Code of Professional Conduct and, of course, professional skepticism. Naturally, "normal" people shouldn't be expected to know these things.

We welcome your suggestions for future topics and hope you enjoy the following. Now let's stop blabbering and get right to it!

YouTube has been a bit wonky all morning (GET IT TOGETHER, GOOGLE) but we finally coaxed an embed code out of them for your viewing pleasure — if you can't see the video, it's because Google is fuxing around with something and totally screwing this whole thing up.

This little guy (gal?) is equal parts creepy and cool. The bizarre creature you see here is a pangolin, sort of like a battle-ready anteater or a walking grey artichoke. Pangolins are found across Asia and parts of Africa and, unfortunately, due to being tasty, are one of the most endangered mammals on this planet of ours.

Welcome back to Busy Season Zen, our weekly break from the monotony of your miserable life.

I swore after I fell on ice and broke my face a weeks back that I would never indulge in videos of people falling ever again because it most certainly wasn't funny when it happened to me (although I bet anyone downtown who saw it laughed their ass off) but the following isn't "people" and it's just too cute not to share with you all.

Seemed fitting what with another round of Snowmaggedon headed straight this way. I don't know about you but I don't intend to leave the house until March if I can help it.

The original video is 11 seconds long, but here's 10 whole minutes on a loop! You're welcome.

Personally I think this could have been better done in front of a backdrop of some accounting firm logo but oh well.

I have no idea what took us so long but effective today, we're going to run a weekly Busy Season Zen moment for you to forget about your troubles and gently fade into a moment outside of yourself where there is no work, no annoying guy loudly yapping a few cubes down, no PCAOB inspectors, no comment section trolls spouting off their opinions.

Close your eyes for a moment (after you finish reading this, obvs) and get centered. Picture yourself at your desk, then floating above your desk, and now you are floating above your building. Zoom out, you're floating above your city now, then your state, then the entire country. Suddenly you realize just how insignificant your misery is, watching the clouds swirl around Earth from the nothing of space…

…found your happy place now? Good. Now watch this baby sea otter having a little snack.

If you have a suggestion for a future Busy Season Zen moment, send it over!

Namaste, bitches!

If you aren't aware, they're doing a little remixing of credentials up there in Canada, so naturally they did an actual remix to hammer the point home before everything becomes official across the country. Note the Canadian CPA — or Chartered Professional Accountant — is not to be confused with the American CPA. Hopefully it doesn't cause any issues like that time the CGA got mad at some guys with CGMA titles for almost pretending to be CGAs (or something).

Are we all clear now? Good, on to the video. The cringe-worthy, frightening, embarrassing video.

Ladies and gentlemen, "What Did the Accountant Say?"

Oh dear. What the…?

Had to love this comment on the video:

Justin Vaughan

Rule 211.1 requires me to report a breach of the Professional Rules Of Conduct. After watching the above video, I have noted two breaches. Both were violated by the advertising department of the CPA Institute.

201.1 A member, student or licensed firm shall act at all times in a manner which will maintain the good reputation of the profession and its ability to serve the public interest. BREACH

217.1 A member or licensed firm may advertise or seek publicity for the member’s or licensed firm's services, achievements or products and may seek to obtain new engagements and clients by various means, but shall not do so directly or indirectly, in any manner
(a) which the member or licensed firm knows, or should know, is false or misleading, or which includes a statement the contents of which the member or licensed firm cannot substantiate;
(b) which makes unfavourable reflections on the competence or integrity of the profession or any member or licensed firm; or BREACH
(c) which otherwise brings disrepute on the profession. BREACH

Someone needs to introduce this guy to Arthur Andersen, Scott London, and the Cleveland intern with a highly condensed schedule of errands.

That said, it's nice to know that average Joes still hold all of you in such high regard, because we all know none of you would EVER celebrate too early. Perhaps the AICPA should integrate this clip into their high school recruiting initiatives.

Watch from the start to get what's going on but the good bit starts at :35

You can sort of tell this is not going to end well as soon as the camera pans out and you spot Bloomberg Senior Economist Joe Brusuelas' white socks. It all goes downhill from there.

In this chaming fireside chat with McGladrey's Joe Adams and McGladrey client Shurtape Technologies CFO Don Pomeroy, Joe reminds us just how Midwestern he is and how dedicated McGladrey is to keeping its finger on the pulse of the economy. Or something. Mostly it's just a lot of awkward fidgeting.

What's odd is that this video — posted by the McGladreyNews YouTube channel — is unlisted, meaning I'm a jerk for somehow finding it and then sharing it here because McG clearly doesn't want this shared. Don't believe me? Look:

Maybe because Joe Adams calls it "the Asia" at 8:25?

Anyway, I thought twice about it and obviously decided to share it anyway. Sorry, guys, had to.

This video is a couple years old, but for whatever reason it was just dropped in the tip box today and we are oh-so glad because it's so frightening it's hilarious

Is it the wedding cake adorned with roses and Patrick Coxes? Is it the carousel of voices? Is it the ginormous Patrick Cox head with the mini-Patrick Cox growing out of his suit? Is it the close-up of Patrick Cox's bearded piehole? Is it the close-ups of Patrick Cox's jowly neckbeard? IS IT THE BRILLIANT USE OF NEGATIVE SPACE? What about the rapid speaking in tongues? And the close-up of Patrick Cox's tongue? GAHHHH! I can't keep talking about it. Just watch.

According to his Twitter bio, The Dancing Accountant is "an accountant who likes to dance" and he will even take your requests.

Before you write this guy off as another unfunny jackass with a Flip cam and too few billable hours, it's not necessarily the dancing that makes this awesome, it's the trolling. The pure, unexpected, delicious trolling.

In July, he went to a Centrelink office (which, in Australia, is sort of akin to one of us crashing the welfare office) to get career advice on making the transition from accountant to professional dancer. And then this happened:

And then there was the Madonna troll at the cosmetics counter:

He promises to upload a new dance weekly but let's face it, he's still an accountant and has shit to do. Follow him on YouTube so when he blows up, you can say you knew about him before he was cool.

Either James Huang really is the most interesting accountant in the world or he just doesn't have enough billable hours but either way, we all win when he makes a video. We first met him in 2011 and we've sort of been obsessed since because let's face it, good accounting videos are hard to come by.

Perhaps Mr. Huang was encouraged to put out a new video featuring EY's (slightly unfortunate) latest rebranding or maybe he just wanted to squeeze the last relevancy out of the Dos Equis guy meme but whatever inspired him to do this, let's all just be grateful he did.

Offer still stands, Jimmy, if you ever want to make some videos for us. We'll provide a Flip cam and an old, outdated copy of iMovie. Oh and plenty of cat extras if you need them. Just think about it.

Folks, allow us to present "Most Interesting Accountant in the World (Spoof)":

The following video from the New Jersey Society of CPAs features Marty Abo, CPA giving a tour of his hilariously awesome house. This house is great because it is the complete opposite of every CPA house I have ever been inside. It's kitschy. It's unpractical. IT'S FUN. Just watch and try telling me you don't feel the same way:

Personally, I could never live in such a place because clutter makes my skin crawl, BUT I do enjoy the following things from Chez Abo:

 • The red leather catsuit lamp.
 • The Abo's Pizza box is a nice shout-out to Colorado.
 • "Of course she's got Chardonnay."
 • That TP roll mount is frightening.
 • "Tell 'em it was the best minute-and-a-half of your life!"

Marty could chain his employees to their desks during busy season, feeding them only bagels and urine-temperature coffee and I'll still work for him so I could party at this house. He'd need to get better beer than Heineken, though.

This little yellow guy is Dexter. I don't know why or how he got into an accounting class, but I can't blame him for nodding off, especially if it was Cost Accounting. That class was the worst.

The frightening moment at the end when Dexter is disoriented and almost accidentally commits adorable duckling suicide is too much. Luckily, his handler was there to catch him. We all would have been rendered useless for the rest of the day if the worst had happened.

For some reason, earlier this year we asked you to submit videos of your busy season exploits as part of some fake contest. The idea was haphazardly thrown together and not taken that seriously, but for whatever reason1 the post sat up top for months. Anyhoo, busy season has been over for everyone for at least a week so I guess we'll wrap this thing in old newspaper and put a bow on it, so we can all move on with our lives. Right? Right.

Truth be told, there were some pretty entertaining vids thrown our way in the past few months, so we'll share some our favorites again so that you can waste a few minutes of your day.

It'd be a huge mistake on our part if the Star Trek parody video was not included. Two out of three GC scribes liked this video, but for whatever reason, spending $60,000 on a training video practically started a riot despite the billions wasted by Congress on [insert your preferred waste of taxpayer dollars]. I have to admit, that the acting isn't as good as any member of Congress can muster.

There have been several MTV Video award-caliber videos from James Huang, but an inspired Les Misérables message of crushed busy season dreams really diversifies his repertoire and it's far less irritating than Anne Hathaway. The end of busy season Twilight effort did not satisfy, however, because — Jesus, enough with vampires already.

Although this video is from a few years ago and the meme is as dead as Hitler himself, it's beyond debate that using an incensed Führer to contemplate decisions around your internal audit function is far more entertaining than reading a whitepaper on the subject.

I don't how this Harlem Shake craze started and I don't want to know. Look, I'm all for putting on crazy costumes and dancing like a bunch of damn fools, but once it becomes ubiquitous on the Internet under false pretenses, then I think we, as a society, need to start doing some serious reflection. HOWEVER, the inexplicable appearance by a baby in a pumpkin shirt:

And a spellbinding performance by a Luigi auditor were a couple of bright spots that made it bearable:

And I suppose that's a nice way to head into compensation season — ecstatic dancing. Thanks for the solid effort everyone; you're all exceptional performers in our book.

1 Possible explanation: I'm lazy.

Thankfully, this James Huang guy did another video. It's about that Twilight book I don't know anything about. I did happen to be at the Barnes & Noble a couple of times when the new ones were being released and it was a good way to meet chicks though.

I'm thinking James should just do videos for Going Concern. Jimbo, if you're interested, you should email Greg, but I'm warning you, he yells a lot and will make you do all the work.
